Matt Froude - Wine/Sake maker
If you speak to Matt, his passion for wine and sake is so pronounced that it’s
hard to imagine him doing anything else, however this is far from reality.
He has had more vocations than he has hot breakfasts. From environmental
engineer and tour guide, to managing English schools in Asia, Matt is a
Jack of all trades. In 2009, after almost 10 years living in Asia, Matt
returned to Australia to study winemaking.
In the few years following his return to Australia Matt completed his
degree in winemaking and managed vintages at Yarra Yering and Debortoli in
the Yarra Valley, Argyle in Oregon USA, Craggy Range in Hawkes Bay New
Zealand, Pierre Gailard in the Northern Rhone France and Wine by Sam in
the Strathbogie Ranges. Matt chose these regions due to his passion for
cool climate winemaking and the production of food friendly low alcohol
wines, in particular cool climate Shiraz.
Since graduation Matt has worked at multiple wineries in winemaker and
winemaking consultant roles and at the same time has been focused on
getting Municipal Wines up and running. A desire to make an elegant food
friendly Tempranillo lead to another overseas vintage in Rioja Spain
followed by one in Yamanashi Japan with Matt's focus on making elegant and
varietal Cabernet Franc.
Matt has now stepped away from his previous roles to focus on Municipal
full time. Matt currently makes the Municipal wines range in the
picturesque Strathbogie Ranges and works at a sake brewery in Shiga, Japan
producing two Municipal sakes of amazing quality.
